Obtaining PSCAD V5

1. Introduction

Manitoba Hydro International Ltd. is pleased to announce the release of PSCAD™/EMTDC™ Version V5. A complete listing of the new features, models, and capabilities are available in the topics in this webpage.

Since many options are available with this software, the following information is intended to help customers to make the most suitable selections for their organization.

2. MHI Products

2.1 Software


The following packages will be available at the PSCAD V5 release:

  • “PSCAD V5 Pro Base”, which includes:
    o One license for PSCAD V5 (Professional Edition)
    o One license for PSCAD Initializer

  • “PSCAD V5 Pro Enhanced Suite”, which includes:
    o One license for PSCAD V5 (Professional Edition)
    o One license for PSCAD Initializer
    o One license for PRSIM (for converting either PSS/E or PowerFactory to PSCAD)
    o One license for Enerplot

  • “PSCAD V5 Pro Academic Base”, which includes:
    o One license for PSCAD V5 (Professional Academic Edition)
    o One license for PSCAD Initializer

  • “PSCAD V5 Pro Academic Enhanced Suite”, which includes:
    o One license for PSCAD V5 (Professional Academic Edition)
    o One license for PSCAD Initializer
    o One license for PRSIM Acd (for converting either PSS/E or PowerFactory to PSCAD)
    o Ten licenses for Enerplot Acd

  • “PSCAD Educational”, which includes:
    o One license for PSCAD V5 (Educational Edition)
    o One license for PSCAD Initializer

  • “PRSIM – PowerFactory”, which includes:
    o One license for PRSIM, for converting PowerFactory to PSCAD

  • “PRSIM – PSS/E”, which includes:
    o One license for PRSIM, for converting PSS/E to PSCAD

A PRSIM license may be configured for importing either PSS/E or PowerFactory into PSCAD. Please specify your preference.

3. Required Third-Party Software

A third-party compiler is required to build a PSCAD project, which can then be run. Two versions of the GFortran compiler come bundled with PSCAD for free, and are suitable for small to medium sized projects. Or, a combination of the following compiling software may be used instead, and is recommended for larger, more complex projects:

  • Intel compiler
    (A named-user license may be purchased through MHI;
    The floating (network) license and the Concurrent (network) are not available through MHI)

  • Microsoft Visual Studio (not available through MHI)
