2026 PSCAD European TSO Forum
Barcelona Spain

Over two days, TSOs, DSOs, major developers and manufacturers will share their current applications, technical challenges and roadmaps for the next three to five years. Technical discussions will cover large-scale EMT modelling and computational performance; converter control interactions and dynamic frequency scanning of inverter-based resources; multi-vendor HVDC systems; data centres and other complex loads; co-simulation and grid connection tools; and TSO–DSO model exchange. Model maintenance, including how models remain representative as plant settings and control systems change, will also form part of the discussion.
The forum will close with a round table on the future of EMT practice in Europe, identifying shared priorities and the support system operators, developers and manufacturers need from one another.
Event Abstract
In September 2024, more than 25 system operators from across Europe and beyond, alongside major developers, met in Edinburgh to share practical experience of large-scale electromagnetic transient (EMT) modelling. Contributions from SSEN, Energinet, Fingrid, National Grid ESO, Terna, Red Eléctrica and Iberdrola, and others covered wide-area studies, validation against system events, model integration and applications in system operation.
The growing deployment of HVDC links, offshore wind, grid-forming inverters and large loads such as data centres is increasing the need to understand interactions across plants, technologies and network boundaries. The April 2025 Iberian blackout has further highlighted the importance of voltage control, protection behaviour and the system-wide consequences of local plant responses.
The 2nd edition of PSCAD European TSO Forum 2026 will keep large-scale EMT modelling as its central theme, focusing on the challenges TSOs face in building and maintaining wide-area EMT models and how these models can support connection assessment, network planning and system operation. Discussions will also cover how new connection plants and load models are specified, delivered, exchanged and validated against site tests and recorded disturbances, while protecting manufacturers’ intellectual property and confidential network information. Wide-area tools developed by MHI, including co-simulation between RMS and EMT, the Grid Connection Tool and Dynamic Frequency Scan, will be presented to support practical wide-area studies. The importance of Agentic AI and its use cases for PSCAD will also be introduced.

Programme
Wednesday 9 December
Day 1 will focus on system operators, with presentations grouped by region to encourage discussion of common challenges and approaches.
Thursday 10 December
Day 2 will focus on DSOs, developers and manufacturers. PSCAD presenters will also share the latest software developments and the roadmap for large-scale EMT simulation.
The full programme will be released once the speaker list is confirmed.
This invitation-only forum is fully sponsored by PSCAD and will provide time for technical discussion and networking, including an evening reception. Venue and reception details will be issued with the programme.
