Breaker Properties

The following sections provide more detail on various input parameters for the Single-Phase Breaker and the Three-Phase Breaker components.

Pre-Insertion Resistance

A pre-insertion resistance may be represented if required.  If this option is selected, the pre-insertion resistance is inserted following the ON (close) signal and a specified time delay Time Delay for Closing Breaker.  Pre-insertion resistance is removed after the delay specified by Time Delay for Bypassing Pre-Insertion.  Both these times are counted from the instant when the control signal changes from 1 (open) to 0 (close).

When an OFF (open) signal is received, the breaker will open and the pre-insertion resistance will be inserted instantaneously, or at the next current zero, depending on the configuration.  Pre-insertion resistance will be removed at the following current zero.

Ideal Branch

The breaker may be represented as an ideal branch when ON (closed), by entering 0.0 W (or a value less than the Ideal Branch Threshold) as the closed resistance. For more on ideal branches, see Ideal Branches.  Simulation of an ideal short circuit can slow down the simulation, so use a non-zero value (larger than the Ideal Branch Threshold) wherever possible.

Animation States

The breaker, when in High Voltage Display mode, will display its current state as either red (closed) or green (open) using the PSCAD Active Graphics feature.  The Active Graphics algorithm requires initial values to be set for display at time t = 0.0, and therefore extra parameters are requested for input. These inputs are only valid at time t = 0.0, and are ignored at all other times.
