Standalone License Manager

The standalone license manager is installed alongside a PSCAD lock-based license that is shared with client machines or contains multiple seats. The license manager can operate on a dedicated server, or directly on any workstation running PSCAD, as applicable.

The license manager should never be installed alongside a one-seat license that is hosted on the PSCAD client machine. Instead, self-licensing should be used, in which the license manager software embedded in the PSCAD application manages the license.

Refer to Lock-Based Licensing for further details.

Installation and Setup

The standalone license manager is installed using the InstallShield Wizard. This installer is normally run from the PSCAD Installation Package, which is downloaded from MyCentre. The installation files are unzipped before proceeding. Running the setup.exe file from the main folder will launch an installer for multiple products, including the license manager. Or, running the setup.exe file from within the License sub-folder will only launch the license manager installation.

When the installation launches, proceed through each sequential menu. When the Setup Tool displays, configure how the license manager will be used:

When prompted to install the license database file, select Yes if you have not already installed the file, and refer to Adding/Modifying Licenses.

Please refer to the Knowledge Base article: Setting up the License Manager, for details on installation and setup.

Manually Starting

The license manager may be started by selecting Start License Manager Service from the Windows Start menu.

Manually Stopping

The license manager may be stopped by selecting Stop License Manager Service from the Windows Start menu.

Maintenance and Support

Once the standalone license manager is installed and running, it is recommended that the person operating the designated license manager server maintains the software and ensures proper operation.

The standalone license manager usually starts automatically when the server is booted and runs as a background process.  All license usage is tracked in the PSCAD Usage Log, and all license manager events and transactions are recorded in a log file entitled Lmgrd-log.txt. When troubleshooting, the Lmgrd-log.txt file, along with the PscadLmgr.txt file on the client workstation, contain important information to help diagnose licensing issues. All three log files, as well as the Get Info Utility listed below, are located as specified in Reviewing Licensing Information.

If any licensing issues cannot be diagnosed from the licensing log files, please feel free to request assistance from PSCAD Support Services. Include a detailed description of the problem, and attach the following log files, which are found as specified above, to your e-mail:
